CITIES Timanfaya is a revolutionary project that, based on a technological demonstrator that will be operational in the spring of 2020, that the route through the Route of the Volcanoes in Timanfaya (Lanzarote Island, in the Canary archipelago) is carried out in vehicles of latest generation, electric, autonomous and multimedia.
With funding from the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) and a budget of just over one million euros, the project began in November of 2018, after the administrative formalization of the contract between the Centers for Arts, Culture and Tourism (CACT) of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Spanish Road Association, which acts as coordinating entity. Thus, it is expected that the technological demonstrator, an electric and autonomous minibus, will be operating in April or May next year. A few months later, using the technology developed, electric and autonomous buses, multimedia, will replace the current diesel engine.
CITIES Timanfaya intends to place Spain on the world map of driverless mobility. It is a revolutionary and intelligent concept for the use of an ecological, autonomous and safe transport in a unique framework such as the Timanfaya National Park. In this way, CITIES will not only make the island of Lanzarote a world leader in quality tourism, but will position Spanish technology at the forefront of global R&D.
